How a Refrigerator Works

A refrigerator uses basic refrigeration principles to extract the heat from air. Refrigerant circulates between an evaporator and a condenser in a closed system that provides a continual cycle of cooling.

Refrigeration Basics

the basic principles of refrigeration, you will be able to understand any type of refrigeration system you might encounter. For any mechanical refrigeration system, the principles and essential components are the same no matter how big or small, or how they are packaged together.
The diagram below illustrates the four basic components of every refrigeration system. These include the Evaporator, the Compressor, the Condenser, and a Metering Device. A refrigerant is then circulated through each component for the sole purpose of removing heat.

Chart

What is Refrigeration? Refrigeration is simply cooling by removing heat. Heat is a form of energy that can't be destroyed. Therefore to remove heat we can only transfer from one place to another. Even though it is easier to think of refrigeration as the process of making things cold, it actually is the process of transferring heat from one place to another.
Let's apply this to an example of a walk-in cooler used for the storage of product. In order to cool this room, we need to transfer the heat from inside this room, to somewhere outside this room. This happens in several steps.

Chart

Step 1- Air is drawn across a refrigerant Coil, or evaporator, inside the room. As refrigerant flows through this coil, the heat is transferred from the air to the refrigerant. This causes a temperature drop in the air as it passes across the coil.
Step 2- The refrigerant then flows to the condensing unit, where the refrigerant eventually transfers the heat to the outside air at the air cooled condenser. (we will cover the details further on)
Step 3- After the heat is removed from the refrigerant- it then circulates back to the room evaporator to repeat the process.
In review, we removed the heat from the room by transferring the heat from the air into the refrigerant (1). The refrigerant carried this heat to the outdoor air cooled condenser, then this heat was transferred from the refrigerant to the outside air (2).

Frost-free

Today, mostrefrigerators are frost-free. They have automatic defrosting systems sothat you don't have to take everything out of your refrigerator to meltbuilt-up ice in the freezer. An automatic defrost system includes atimer, a limit switch, and a heater, which melts away frost.

Refrigerator failure is usually caused by the unit's electrical controls, such as the timer or temperature control.

The ideal temperature for a freezer is between -5 and 5 degrees F and between 36 and 38 degrees F for the fresh food section.

Efficiency - Working with the Refrigerant Circuit

To measure what is happening the first thing to do is to find the temperatures and pressures at key points in the circuit. Measurement points for Temperature T and Pressure P can be used to define the process.

The Vapour Compression Cycle, Practical Circuit and P-h Charts

Once the points 1,2,3,4 in the P-h diagram have been defined, the cycle can be plotted on a P-h chart. P-h charts for all common working fluids (refrigerants) are available. In these charts the pressure and enthalpy values are shown to scale. In the old days large charts were used, and refrigeration engineers would plot the circuit diagram on the chart, allowing various parameters at each point in the circuit to be read. The pressure level before and after compression determines the position of the horizontal lines. These pressure levels define the evaporating and condensing temperature and this can be read off the chart by finding which temperature line intersects the saturation curve. The measured temperatures determine the end points of the lines, using the contour lines of temperature shown on the chart.

Today, refrigerant properties are readily available on the computer, and so working with charts has come to be a thing of the past. The computer method is very much faster. Information on all parameters such as evaporating temperature, condensing temperature, superheat, subcooling, and COP is instantly available from the pressure and temperature sensor inputs which feed the data directly in to the computer. .

Selection Research

To select a means of refrigeration one must first understand thedifferent types.  There are three basic types of refrigeration used inportable fridge/freezers; thermoelectric refrigeration, absorption refrigeration, and refrigeration using reciprocating compressors.

Thermoelectric(TE) coolers work electronically without the use of Freon, compressorsor evaporators.  In a thermoelectric cooler, direct current is appliedto a semiconductor which makes one side of it hot, and one side cold(which is known as the Peltier effect). Typically these units have theability to either heat or cool.
Thermoelectricunits draw a large amount of current (4.6 Amps) and can only cool toabout 30 degrees below ambient temperature.  Most units do not have theability to freeze, or maintain a steady internal refrigeratedtemperature.  Consequently they take many hours to cool a warm bottleof water.
They are very cheap – most retailing under $100, and light weight.  They can be bought almost anywhere.
Absorptionrefrigeration units work by using ammonia as the coolant, water andhydrogen gas to create a continuous cycle for the ammonia.  Thesecoolers typically have no moving parts, and generally run on propane orgas.
Absorption refrigeration unitshave five major parts, a generator which produces ammonia gas, aseparator which isolates ammonia gas from water, a condenser where hotammonia gas is cooled and condensed to create liquid ammonia, anevaporator where liquid ammonia evaporates to create cold temperaturesin side the cooler, and an absorber which absorbs the ammonia gas intowater.
Heat is applied to the generator. Theheat comes from burning something like gas, propane or kerosene.  Inthe generator is a solution of ammonia and water.  The heat raises thetemperature of the solution to the boiling point of the ammonia.  Theboiling solution flows to the separator.  In the separator, the waterseparates from the ammonia gas.  The ammonia gas flows upward to thecondenser.  The condenser is composed of metal coils and fins thatallow the ammonia gas to dissipate its heat and condense into aliquid.  The liquid ammonia makes its way to the evaporator, where itmixes with hydrogen gas and evaporates, thus producing coldtemperatures inside the refrigerator.  The ammonia and hydrogen gasesflow to the absorber.  Here, the water that has collected in theseparator is mixed with the ammonia and hydrogen gases.  The ammoniaforms a solution with the water and releases the hydrogen gas, whichflows back to the evaporator.  The ammonia-and-water solution flowstoward the generator to repeat the cycle.

How to Clean a Refrigerator

Refrigerators need to be cleaned inside and out on a regular basis.

Although the recommended temperature of a refrigerator is 40°, bacteria and mold still grow and can make you sick if eaten. Contamination often spreads in the refrigerator and ruins other food.

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Mild Dish Soap
  • Dishcloths Or Kitchen Sponges
  • Vinegar Or Baking Soda
    • 1

Turn the temperature-control knob inside the refrigerator to 'Off.' If you have a refrigerator with a drip pan underneath, remove it to clean.

    • 2

Take everything out of the refrigerator.

    • 3

Throw away any food that is moldy, outdated or otherwise spoiled.

    • 4

Take all removable parts out of the refrigerator, including shelves, wire racks and drawers.

    • 5

Fill the sink with warm, soapy water (use a mild dish soap).

    • 6

Wipe any food matter out of the drawers.

    • 7

Hand-wash the shelves, wire racks and drawers, then rinse them in warm water.

    • 8

Let the shelves, wire racks and drawers drain in a dish rack, on paper towels or on newspapers.

    • 9

Remove any food matter from the bottom of the refrigerator.

    • 10

Wash the inside of the refrigerator using a sponge or dishcloth and the warm, soapy water. Remember the compartments and door racks.

    • 11

Rinse the inside of the refrigerator with a sponge or dishcloth and clean warm water.

    • 12

For odor control, use a solution of 2 tbsp. baking soda to 1 quart warm water to wash the inside of the refrigerator. A solution of 1 cup of vinegar and 1 gallon warm water is also effective; apply and rinse. A box of baking soda placed in the refrigerator will also cut down on odors.

    • 13

Replace all shelves, wire racks and drawers.

    • 14

Wash the outside of the refrigerator and the gasket (rubber molding around the door) with warm, soapy water; rinse and wipe dry.

    • 15

Turn the temperature control knob inside the refrigerator back to the recommended setting.

    • 16

Return the food to the refrigerator, first wiping off any bottles or jars that are sticky.
